Let’s consider some examples that illustrate how such projects cause and contribute to conflict on different scales. 

Drought is often portrayed as the surest route through which climate change will deepen and exacerbate conflict.
But hydraulic developments come with negative side-effects, which can generate conflict and insecurity. These are dislocation, destruction, discrimination, danger and dependency.
As Barack Obama put it,
